In my opinion the only thing better than homemade cranberry sauce is flavoured homemade cranberry sauce! Here’s a variation that uses oranges and spice; two flavours that embody fall and winter in my opinion.
- 1 pack of fresh cranberries
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 cup of orange juice
- orange zest to taste (4 tbsp)
- cinnamon to taste (1 tsp)
- cloves to taste (1 tsp)
Wash off the cranberries making sure to pick out any bad-looking ones. Add them to a pot with the water orange juice and sugar and let them simmer until they look like cranberry sauce. The cranberries will all burst and the pectin will gel up. I love watching it transform before my eyes. When it starts looking like a beautiful sauce add the orange zest and spices and take a deep breath as that beautiful smell starts to fill the room. Delicious! I can’t wait to make my batch for this thanksgiving!!
Your orange cranberry spiced jel sounds wonderful. I would like to know what all foods are best with it on and how long of a shelf life it has either after opened or before. I was thinking of giving it to my guests at a brunch I am having in Nov. I would appreciate any info you can give me. Thanks so much!
It think that it tastes best with turkey or chicken. I really like it on chicken sandwiches! I have never actually canned it. I usually eat it fresh I would say when made fresh it would have a shelf life of about 4 days in the fridge. I imagine that if you canned it it would have the same shelf life of any jam. I don’t realy know much about canning yet; although I hope to learn about it soon!
