Oil Pulling: A Simple Way to Vastly Improve Your Health.

A little while back I was suddenly hit by an infuriating affliction called overactive bladder. It can be described as having a sensation of feeling like you need to pee even though you don’t. This sense of urgency was so intense that it was not unusual for me to lay awake at night unable to sleep. I had many hours to contemplate my impending doom as a victim of some sort of rare devastating bladder disease. After a long-awaited trip to the urologist I was assured that this annoying but otherwise harmless state of being was surprisingly common in women in their late twenties and without treatment I could expect it to clear up on its own in one to two years. I was relieved by the prognosis but admittedly a little discouraged by the amount of time it would take. Desperately I searched for some sort of relief. I could not imagine feeling that way for so long.  That was when I discovered a book written by Deepak Chopra called “Perfect Health”. This book introduced me to the amazing powers of Ayurvedic healing. Now around three years later I finally feel normal again and I credit the Ayurvedic practices for that. Who would have ever thought that something so simple as eating cream of wheat or drinking hot milk could completely quite the rage of my angry bladder. Yoga poses and sesame oil were infinitely more effective than any medicine I hade been prescribed. Meditation was also remarkably effective in teaching me to control parts of my body that otherwise ran on reflex. It was pretty amazing stuff.

At that time I became a complete believer in Ayurvedic healing and how incredibly powerful simple things can be when it comes to altering your health. Oil pulling is admittedly kind of weird. That’s why I felt I needed a little bit of a back story as to why I would be compelled to try it in the first place. Simply I have seen the effectiveness of Ayurvedic healing in the past and I believe in it completely.

Oil pulling is the practice of taking a tablespoon of sesame oil in your mouth andswishing it around for twenty minutes a day. It really is that simple. The only rules are to be sure that you are sitting or standing and to not gargle with it. Try to swish it through your teeth and when you spit it out spit it through your teeth as well. It is also most effective when done first thing in the morning before your first glass of water. If you do it at any other time of day it is best 4 hours after food. I do it both morning and at night.

The Idea here is that the oil pulls all of the toxins in your body up into your mouth and then sucks them right into it so you can just spit them out. I originally stumbled across this practice when I was reading about oral hygiene. Oil pulling is said to be remarkably good for your teeth and gums. There are even claims that if you do oil pulling daily you will never again have a cavity or even bad breath. I have been doing oil pulling for only a week now and I cannot believe how clean and strong my teeth and gums are. My teeth are also noticeably whiter.

Of all the things we can do to increase our life span the number one thing is to floss and brush our teeth regularly. Shockingly proper oral hygiene can add 8 years to our lives! That’s even more than quitting smoking; to give you an idea of how big of a deal that is. Oral hygiene is directly linked to heart health. If your gums are bleeding when you floss that is an indication of how healthy your heart is.

For improved oral hygiene, heart health and detoxing alone oil pulling is absolutely worth the 20 minutes a day of my time. But I could not believe what else it does for the body. If you are going to change one thing in your life to make you healthy this would be a great option.

Oil pulling has been use to effectively treat both cancer and AIDS. Yet it is so gentle that pregnant women can safely do it.

Depending on what you are treating and how bad it is you can see results as quickly as 4 days or it can take as long as a year. Sometimes if what you are suffering from is quite acute it can make you feel worse at first but if you persist you will get better quickly. If you cannot handle the discomfort simply stop for a few days and then start up again.

Personally I have experienced no discomfort at all. In fact I feel amazing, I’m getting better sleep, I don’t feel stiff and sore when I get up in the morning, even after a hard day of work, and my teeth are the healthiest they have been in years. I strongly recommend this practice.

      I know, it seems absolutely crazy but I have been doing it now for about 6 weeks and I feel amazing! What I do is get that sesame oil in there even before I pee in the morning and those 20 minutes seem to go by really fast. I do all my bathroom stuff and clean up a bit and before I know it the time is up. I accidentally went for an extra 10 this morning.

    I prefer to do this in the shower. When youre done washing, spit it down the drain and wash your face. Less mess…. More than once a week made my teeth really sensitive. My old fillings changed from black back to silver, and the weird metallic taste was gone. I have heard doing this too much will make your fillings fall out. How is your progress?

      Such a great idea! I think it’s so cool that it changed your fillings back to being clean! I haven’t done it in a while but I have been wanting to get back at it. You have inspired me to start again.
