Here is a good starting point for a from scratch chocolate cake.

2 cups white sugar
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water

Instructions:

Start by preheating your oven to 350°. Mix dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately before adding the dry into the wet 1/3 at a time. Reserve the boiling water for the end and stir it in by hand. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. 18-23 mins for cupcakes.

        • Hi, Thank you so much for the compliment! Embarrasingly I made that cake such a long time ago I can’t remember what frosting I used. I think it was just a basic chocolate icing made with a pound of butter and a kg of icing sugar. I also add about a 1/4 cup of cocoa and 2 tbsps of vanilla (tahitian is my favorite) mix the cocoa and the vanilla with the butter first. I’ve found if I add it in last it stays gritty for some reason. Then I add a splash of milk or cream to get the right consistency. It is delicious; one of my favorites. I have not yet tried making ganache but I hope to soon and get a recipe up there for everyone! Hope this helps! And thanks for reading!!

    • Hi Ela, I had to go back and re-read the article. The recipe calls for two cups of sugar as the first ingredient. Generally speaking I would be terrified to bake a chocolate cake with out sugar but now I’m kind of curious how that would taste.
