It’s a little rainy out there today and it seemed like the perfect day to dust off the ol’ Viennese Hot Chocolate recipe. I love this one but since I really only feel like hot chocolate drinks during cold weather I feel like I discover something new each year when I remember this one! For a time when you just can’t decide between coffee and hot chocolate this is truly the best of both worlds! This has been one of my favorites since I was a teenager.
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/3 cup sugar
2 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cup freshly brewed strong coffee or espresso
In a medium sauce pan stir sugar and cocoa together to break up any lumps in the cocoa and then add just enough coffee to melt the sugar and cocoa into a paste (this will prevent lumps). Slowly add the rest of the ingredients and whisk until hot and frothy!
Just like any other recipe feel free to tweak this one if it’s too sweet or needs more cocoa just keep adding or removing until you find the flavor that you enjoy most. Don’t forget to note the changes you make so you can make it perfect the next time! You can always garnish with a cinnamon stick and if you feel like it you can add a dash of cinnamon and cayenne pepper right into the mix!
